Indian Railway Signalling
In the Indian railway, signalling plays a vital role in train movement and safety. Railway signalling is classified into two main parts as a motion of railway between two stations and motion of railway inside the stations. Indian Railway Signalling System is one of the few cultivated systems of Railways that operates and manages a large number of train movements safely and efficiently. These Signalling systems developed in the Indian railway, however, it has been evolved in decades by valuable research and development of Signalling experts. Signals are provided to control and protect the Indian Railway Network against accidents and traffic.
There are two types of Railway Signalling commonly used like permissive signalling and absolute signalling. The Permissive signal systems are used for protecting the railway network and Absolute signals are used for protecting and controlling the network.
Railway signals fail due to short circuits and atmospheric circumstances like heavy rain. In an open environment, exposed cables or wear/tear of cable cover may create short-circuits and turn the signal to Red.
The Signalling and Telecommunication department is taking care of operation and maintenance.
This Signalling and Telecommunication department works with the following principles,
- To prevent the collision of trains.
- To prevent the derailment of train bogies.
- To avoid the collision of a train with road vehicles.
- To avoid collision of a train with railway assets such as Platform, footbridges, and Operation and maintenance staff.
